Volcanic eruptions can cause cold weather
Volcanic eruption in Iceland can significantly lower temperatures for several years to come. It happened in 1963, 1982 and 1991, and now it is perhaps beginning to happen again. Violent volcanic eruptions could mean temperature drop of several degrees up to a few years after the outbreaks occurred.
The preceding year refers to the volcano eruption in Indonesia respectively, Mexico and the Philippines, after which the mean was one to two degrees lower than normal for up to a couple of years.
Sebastian H. Mernild are climate and polar research and has, together with a team of American researchers studied vulkanudbruds effect of melting water from inland ice in Greenland and found that in years after a volcanic eruption is melting fallen by as much as 30 per cent, which reflects the decreasing temperature.
The characteristic is that these outbreaks occurred in the southern hemisphere but then got effect on the temperature in Greenland, which lies thousands of miles away.
Sebastian H. Mernild explains that it is the same particles, which is currently preventing the air in much of northern Europe, if eruption products long enough to disperse in the atmosphere and prevent some of the light from the sun to come down to earth and heat it up.
“These particles can have a chilling effect, although we now have a global warming. That does not mean that global warming is canceled, it is just a small bump on the road,” says Sebastian H. Mernild to jp.dk.
He underlines that the outbreak in Iceland, last considerably longer than it has done so far if it is to have a significant effect on temperatures, and that it is difficult to say exactly when it will have an effect. According volcano expert Henning Andersen eruption in the volcano Eyjafjallajökull previously lasted for up to two years and it might happen again.
“It is impossible to predict, but the last eruption was in the outbreak, it lasted for most of two years. So it is not inconceivable that it could happen again,” says Henning Andersen jp.dk.
